How to Float Bluff the Flop

This means that you called their preflop raise with position, so in the MP, CO or BTN and on the flop you bet after they showed weakness with a check.

Here’s what to look for to successfully float the flop:

• The open-raiser is flop honest when OOP (Cbet Flop OOP < 60%).
• It helps if he has a high-card heavy range (Broadways and sc’s).
• Make a “value” bet size (>50% pot).
• Dry boards work well (A92r, Q74r, 952r).
• Blockers to strong draws are good (Ah on hhc, 9X on 678).
• Their XC (check-call) = Connected. So, drawing and back-door equity are good to have on the flop so you can barrel bluff many turn cards.
• If you can say, “His check = weak, and I know he’s folding most of his overcards and non-pairs” then you’ve found a great float bluff opportunity.

When the above are in place, pull the trigger and float ’em!

Example Hand

Villain 4 opened and Hero called with 98s. Villain 4 is more flop honest when cbetting from OOP, so his flop check = weakness. Hero pounced on it with a >50% pot sized bet (with back-door and 2nd pair drawing equity) and took it down. On any club, J, T, 9 or 8, Hero would’ve barreled to keep up the pressure with additional fold, drawing or showdown equity.
