I Want to Learn and Grow From My Mistakes

“You manifest a ceiling when you shy away.” – Shy Away by Twenty One Pilots

Hiding from mistakes = NOT learning from them and you put a ceiling on your own poker growth.

I like to consider my mistaken hands as friends; they tell me what I need to work on. It’s just critical that I notice them and review them later during my poker study time.

When I share a poker mistake in my coaching, I discuss why it was a mistake and what I should’ve done instead. Take notes on what I’m telling you so you can work to avoid the pitfall I stepped in.

“If Sky did this, but he shoulda done that… I’LL DO THAT NEXT TIME!”

Mistakes Help You Consider Your Options

“Whenever you find a pitfall, it makes the road easier to walk the next time.” – Sigmund in Spy x Family

Avoid the pitfalls; go around, jump over, take a different street, or just exit the street altogether.

We’re NLHE players, we’ve got options: Bet, check, call, fold, raise. Plus, being “no limit”, we can bet/raise anywhere from 1bb- 1,000bb!

Consider all your options and decide on the best play to avoid the pitfalls.

Mistakes Lead to Exceptional Performance

“Extraordinary results aren’t built solely on extraordinary results. They’re built on failure too… When we fail, we stop, ask what we need to do to succeed, learn from our mistakes, and grow. Don’t be afraid to fail. See it as part of your learning process and keep striving for your true potential.” The ONE Thing, pg. 94.

Michael Jordan was never afraid to take the buzzer-beating, game winning shot. Thomas Edison didn’t make 1,000 mistakes, instead, he “found 1,000 ways to NOT make a lightbulb.”

Take Action

Don’t delete or shy away from mistakes. Embrace ’em, review ’em, learn from ’em.

Create a “Mistake” tag:

• Use it when you make ’em, review ’em all later.
• Goal: Learn from mistakes!!!!
• “Why did I make this mistake?”
• Was it a strategy issue? Pay attention issue?  Mental game issue?
• Figure it out and commit to NOT making that mistake in the future. Sidestep, avoid or jump over the pitfalls!
