The details matter. Greater awareness leads to better decisions and bigger profits.
Think of it like driving. Safe drivers scan constantly, mirrors, road ahead, blind spots, not just when something goes wrong. Poker demands the same awareness. The details you collect between decisions are what make the decisions themselves easier and more profitable.
Listen to episode #592 as you follow along below:
The 8 Key Details
1. Stack Sizes
Factor stack sizes into every decision. Iso-raising a full-stack with 7♠5♠ is fine. Against 18bb, it’s reckless. Set-mining against a 200bb stack is great. Against 25bb, fold the 3♣3♦ and wait for a better spot.
2. Pot Size Growth
Look ahead to future street’s pot and stack sizes before continuing in the hand. Holding TPWK in a 3bet pot on a wet flop, facing a large cbet, means a massive turn pot, a large turn bet, and possibly a river shove. Sometimes the best money saved is the bet you never call on the flop.
3. Watch the Action
Stay engaged even after you fold. If you miss a player check-raising and showing a set two orbits ago, you might stack off with top pair the next time that exact pattern repeats. The hands you’re not in are still important, so continue observing because you just may learn something.
4. Remember the Story
Decisions are easier when see the full picture. Your read on a river shove is improved when you remember their preflop 3bet, the flop and turn barrels, and the sizing progression. Don’t just react to the final action, reconstruct the hand. Training your hand reading skills (Action #50) is the most reliable way to build this habit.
5. HUD Stats
Stats develop over a session and can reveal new exploits you didn’t see at the start. Someone who looked like a calling station early might show a 75% Fold to Cbet after 50 more hands. Don’t cling to early reads.
6. New Players
New players change the table dynamics. A maniac busting and being replaced by a TAG creates new steal opportunities. Three fish leaving and three regs sitting down might be reason enough to change tables. One thing to watch: HUD software sometimes lags a hand or two when a player changes seats. Confirm the stats match the player before making a stats-based play.
7. Your Image
How they see you determines how they play against you. If you’ve been playing a LAG style, expect looser calls and fewer folds. If you appear TAG, you can steal more, but they may attack your foldy nature as well. Ask yourself regularly: What do they think of me right now? Use the answer to set traps and exploit their assumptions.
8. Notes for Future Profit
When you spot something exploitable, write it down immediately. In future hands, check your notes before acting and trust what they tell you.
Pro Tip: Use lowercase for action history. “7bb 3bet with J9s.” Use all caps for instructions to yourself: “4BET BLUFF HIS TINY 3BETS.”
Take Action
Study 1 Full Session
Pull up a recent break-even session and review it from start to finish. Write the 8 key details on a sticky note before you begin. For each hand, ask: Where did missing one of these details cost me chips or a read?
Take note of your mistakes so you can work to not repeat them.
Practice
Play a focused 1-table session with the sticky note in front of you. Scan all 8 details continuously, not just when you’re in a hand. Use the info to sharpen your reads and tighten your exploits. Tag key hands for review.
